Studies (please see this paper) which were conducted for the UK Carbon Trust in 2005 estimated that the UK could source 5% of its electricity needs from tidal stream power.

Globally, these same studies estimate around 50GW of tidal power farms could be installed in the known areas of high tidal flow.

These figures, though very large, are the smallest estimates widely available. Most other studies (an example is here) suggest that the available tidal resource is somewhat larger. We believe that the UK could source at least 10% of its electricity from tidal stream power.
